Best of the Best
Every July, EIL unveils the annual Best Of issue. It is one of the most anticipated issues of the year and yet I have a love/hate relationship with it. If it were up to me, I would have 500 categories, because there is so much to do, see and experience here. But, as I’ve been told numerous times by voters, it takes forever to type in your choice for the 100+ categories we have already! I do want to thank all of you loyal readers who took the time and effort to go online and cast your votes. Each email address can only vote one time, so I was especially pleased that this year we had the largest number of voters ever. I must admit that I never participate in the Best Of voting. I could never cast a vote for one of our advertisers over another and, to be totally honest, it would be extremely hard for me to vote for someone who doesn’t advertise in my magazine. Since I didn’t vote in this year’s Best Of, I thought I would come up with some of MY Best Of categories.
Best place to park at the movies on Friday night when the parking lot is full: around the back of Island Day Spa.
Best time to try to get on Frederica Road heading south from my house in Sea Palms: 7:45 a.m.
(Worst time to try to get on Frederica Road heading south from my house in Sea Palms: 7:50 a.m.)
Best place to buy scratch-off lottery tickets: I’ll never tell!
Best Cable Company: Comcast (SAID NO ONE EVER!)
Best place to be on the phone when you want to get disconnected: most anywhere on the island if you are on AT&T like me.
Best place to leave your phone: on top of your car as you try to lift your 160lb. dog into the backseat (Best way to discover where you left your phone: by hearing the sound of something sliding down the back of the car roof and off the back end, just as you mutter the words, “son of a #&%*$!”
Best place to test your driving skills: the roundabout in July when all of the tourists who’ve never driven a roundabout are in town
Best day of the week: Tuesday! That’s the day my maid comes.
Best pool to sneak your 160lb Newfoundland into for some night swimming: The condos next door (until they call the cops about a “bear” swimming in the pool).
Best place to be a 12 year old kid: St. Simons Island. You can ride your bike all day, see pretty girls on the beach, eat ice cream at the pier, go to the movies, and stay up late binge-watching shows on Netflix at night during the summer!
Best place to be a 55 year old: St. Simons Island. You can ride your bike for an hour or less, stare at pretty women on the beach, eat frozen yogurt (because it’s supposed to be better for you) at the pier, go to the movies, and stay up till at least 10:00 p.m. binge-watching shows on Netflix during the summer.
I grew up on St. Simons, I live on St. Simons, I LOVE St. Simons. It truly is the BEST OF THE BEST!
P.S. Speaking of the BEST, EIL will be celebrating our 15th Anniversary next month. Be sure to look out for our special 15th Anniversary commemorative edition!
