Fore!
The RSM Classic is once again coming to St. Simons Island. Formerly known as the McGladrey Classic, the tournament is in its 6th year and has become a must stop for PGA touring pros, not only because of the tournament, but also because of the tournament host, Davis Love III. With so many touring pros now living here, it’s easy to see that Davis has a lot of influence. He is not only a future Hall of Fame golfer, but also a Hall of Fame Ambassador for Sea Island and St. Simons.
I’m sure Davis could live anywhere in the country, like Florida, where many touring pros live due to the fact that there’s no state tax. But, he and his lovely wife, Robin, chose to stay here and raise their family.
One of the things I really like about Davis is that he is exactly the same person he was growing up here on the island. That’s certainly a refection of his parents. I’m also proud that as a community, for the most part, most folks don’t pester Davis or the other pros who live here, which is probably one of the reasons they DO live here. Out-of-towners gawk when they walk into Southern Soul and see Zach Johnson or Matt Kuchar chowing down on some BBQ, but locals only nod and smile. These amazing athletes love it here on St. Simons just as much as we do.
The RSM Classic is November 16-22. If you haven’t been out to the tournament, I urge you to take a day and experience a world-class event. In addition to the actual competitive rounds of play at Seaside, and now, Plantation, this year as well, there are numerous other events happening. There’s a special free community day on Monday with afternoon activities for kids. This year’s concert features country superstar Martina McBride and is sure to draw a big crowd to the new airport venue on Saturday night. EIL invites you to join us, along with the PGA TOUR Wives, some of their golfer husbands, and kids from Altama Elementary School, at the Frederica Academy ballfield on Tuesday afternoon for the Wiffle Ball Challenge benefiting Blessings in a Backpack. We’re planning some fun activities for the whole family. The tournament is always a show of great golf and community support at its finest.
I’ll see you on the back nine!
