Summer is FINALLY here! Since we have basically been cooped up all spring, let’s make up for it by having a great summer! If you are visiting St. Simons Island, thank you for coming. We want you to feel like a local. If you’re a local, we want you to feel like you are on vacation. In other words, LET’S HAVE SOME FUN!
There are so many great restaurants, retail shops and activities to experience here on the island. Be sure to pick up a copy of EIL or take a look at the issue online and check out page 18 for a list of our advertising “All Stars.” We urge you to visit and support as many of these local businesses as possible. We’ve come up with lots of suggestions on how to have fun around the area in this June/July “Summer” issue. In the print issue, we’ve also included a copy of the EIL Pocket Guide, our pocket-sized publication filled with handy information about local attractions and happenings and more great ideas for year-round activities.
Here are a few suggestions to help insure a fantastic vacation/staycation:
Ride your bike EVERYWHERE. By that, I really mean EVERYWHERE! Traffic can get pretty heavy in June and July, so why not ride your bike to the Village or beach rather than spending valuable time trying to find a parking spot or stuck in back-ups on Demere Road?! If you don’t have a bike, rentals are available at reasonable rates.
Eat early or late. Most local restaurants start serving dinner early during the summer months, so instead of trying for a 7:00 p.m reservation, maybe hit your favorite dining spot at 5:30 p.m. As for breakfast, sleep in or take a morning beach walk, and then eat a little later than normal. Brunch isn’t just for weekends!
Shop early or late. You can apply the same reasoning to shopping. Many of our terrific local retail shops open at 10:00 a.m. and stay open later in the evening during the summer months. Enjoy a little retail therapy before you hit the beach or do some window shopping after dinner.
Try spending a day in each “section” of the island. Explore the south end including the lighthouse, pier and village area one day. Check out mid-island shopping and dining at Redfern Village, The Shops on Market Street and Shops at Sea Island another day. Then take a day to see the sights like Christ Church, Fort Frederica, and Cannon’s Point on the north end. It is amazing to see how diverse the island is.
Most importantly, now that we have the time, enjoy the island lifestyle and come back to see us soon!
