Halyards Restaurant Group: Doing the Right Thing Tastes Better Too!

Did you know that the “average” tomato that you might consume at the “average” area restaurant has traveled long and hard to get onto your plate? Chances are it was picked while green in a different time zone months ago, treated, crated, repeatedly handled, and in and out of a fleet of refrigerated trucks during its journey.

“We don’t do average,” says Dave Snyder, Owner and Executive Chef of the Halyard Restaurant Group which operates Halyards and Tramici restaurants. Not long ago, Chef Dave decided to take a different road–the short one that connects Glynn and McIntosh counties–for the vast amount of fruits and vegetables his two restaurants need.

Snyder began to deal directly with McIntosh farmers and growers as part of McIntosh SEED. “It stands for Sustainable Economic and Environment Development,” explained Snyder. “The organization is working to improve every facet of life in McIntosh County, from history and housing to infrastructure and farming.”

The benefit to the patrons of Snyder’s two restaurants is a variety of incredibly fresh ingredients. “Literally, these produce items come out of the ground, off the vine or out of the fields on day one and they’re in my kitchens on day two,” stressed Snyder, who says that now all of his produce comes from just up the road, not from across the nation. And they are the only Island restaurants doing it. “It’s better for restaurants because it means a better dining experience for our guests. And it’s good for the economic health of our coast,” added Snyder.

The American Cancer Society Victory Casino Royale Gala Corporate Sponsors

The 2008 American Cancer Society Victory Gala “Casino Royale” will be held Saturday, November 22nd. Local businesses and individuals are already pledging their money and services for this black tie fund raising event, to be held at the Cloister Hotel’s formal ballroom.

Local volunteers with the Victory Gala recognize the need for research and are dedicated to raising funds necessary for ongoing programs in Glynn County and nationwide. Our sponsors are also a critical key to our success; their donations and in-kind services help to keep Gala expenses to a minimum.

Presenting Partners for 2008 are The Sea Island Company and Elegant Island Living magazine. Additional Partners include: Bailey Boys, Beachview Tent Rentals, Georgia Theater Co., H&H Lifestyles, Horizon Advertising, McGinty-Gordon & Associates, Oglethorpe Bank, Paramount Printing, Rich Products, Security Bank, Southeast Georgia Health System, SunTrust Bank, The Bishop Law Firm, The Brunswick News, and The Coastal Bank of Georgia.

Floors of Distinction

With close to 150 years combined experience in the Webster family, David Webster is no newcomer to the flooring business on St. Simons. David literally grew up installing and selling flooring under his father, Allen Webster, and uncles Dean and Ed Webster.

When starting Floors of Distinction, David wanted to create a premier design showroom like none other on St. Simons Island, offering distinctly different flooring products that reflected the style and elegance that designers, architects and discerning homeowners appreciate – all within a reasonable budget. In addition, Webster offers installation service. It was also important to carry on the tradition of professionalism and impeccable work that the Webster family has been known by and respected for all these years.

What differentiates Floors of Distinction from other tile stores and carpet shops is that they are direct distributors of some of the finest names in tile and flooring with brands such as Sonoma Tile, Jeffery Court, Casa Dolce Casa, and Ciottoli Stone. These lines and many others guarantee an abundance of choices for each customer’s taste and budget that will spark the imagination and bring incredible design ideas to life.

Brown’s Antiques

What began as a hobby ended up turning into a family enterprise that spans generations. This month, Brown’s Antiques, which was established in 1968, celebrates 40 years of continuous business.

It was Brenda and Harley Brown’s love of old treasures and past history that led them to open the shop. Their oldest child Brad was only 2 years old at the time. Soon after, Christy came along and went to work, cradled in a wicker laundry basket, joining her mom and brother as shopkeepers. In 1983, child number three, Katie, arrived, quite as a surprise, and joined her brother and sister, growing up in the shop and helping with the business.

Christy Brown now runs the shop full time while Mom and Dad, along with the help of other family members and a long-time, trusted friend conduct on-site estate sales which draw large attendances from the local community as well as dealers and visitors from other areas.

Brown’s Antiques has always been noted for their affordable prices and interesting mix of antiques, jewelry, accessories, china and more that appeals to a wide range of collectors. To accommodate their expanding inventory, they recently opened up additional space directly adjacent to the existing storefront. The Brown Family wishes to thank the community for 40 successful years!
