Dolphin Day 2013
The Annual Super Dolphin Day Race is scheduled for Saturday, February 24th in the Village on St. Simons Island. St. Simons Elementary & Oglethorpe Point Elementary Schools PTA SDDR chairs Brandi Scott & Laura Roberts have been busy planning since the school year began in August. “This year marks the 40th Anniversary of the annual fundraiser; which makes it even more special and exciting for our community!” says St. Simons Elementary Chair Brandi Scott.
The annual fundraiser was originally started by St Simons Elementary PTA members Creta Nichols and Vickie Myers in 1978. The first race only included a one-mile fun run – and the event was so successful, that the PTA decided to make it an annual tradition with the addition of a 5K, 10K and pasta party.
Oglethorpe Point Elementary School PTA joined forces with St. Simons Elementary PTA in 1994 to help organize the race and share the proceeds which are used to purchase items that enrich the students learning experience at both schools. Today, the 3 races annually attract an average of 1000 plus participants and spectators, and the event is one of the largest fundraisers for the schools.
