CARMEN presented by the Peach State Opera
to
Golden Isles Arts & Humanities - The Ritz Theatre 1530 Newcastle St., Brunswick, Georgia 31520
Golden Isles Arts & Humanities is pleased to present the return of Peach State Opera with production of Carmen on Sunday, January 26 at 3 pm at the Historic Ritz Theatre in downtown Brunswick.
The gypsy Carmen is a free spirit who follows her whims and desires, intoxicating and
entertaining those around her but often leaving chaos in her wake. So when the meek but handsome soldier Don José crosses Carmen’s path, it seems that he will eventually join the ranks of forlorn men whom Carmen has loved and then discarded. However, as José becomes obsessed with her, forsaking his fiancée and his career to pursue Carmen through the city of Seville and even treacherous mountain passes, the question emerges: “Who is more dangerous?”
The “Habanera” and “Toreador Song” from Carmen are among the most popular arias in all of opera and have been a part of popular culture for decades. The music of Carmen is widely acclaimed for brilliance of melody, harmony, atmosphere, and orchestration, and for the skill with which Bizet musically represented the emotions and suffering of his characters.
Peach State Opera, a touring company that brings opera to communities across Georgia and beyond was founded in 2009. The organization’s guiding principle is that all audiences deserve access to opera and that the opera world needs a place where emerging artists can express themselves. All their performances are condensed family-friendly versions and are performed in English.
