Mary Ross Waterfront Park Bay Street, City of Brunswick, Georgia 31520
Here it comes again! The 2nd annual Golden Isles Prep Rally community outreach event facilitated by: US Coast Guard Station Brunswick & Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 070- 10-10, Glynn County Emergency Management/First Responders, UGA Marine Brunswick Extension, the City of Brunswick. Participants include the Red Cross, Civil Air Patrol, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Georgia DNR, most Glynn County agencies, Animal Control, Therapy Dogs International, Home Depot kids workshop and so many others. Join in the free learning and fun.
This exciting and important outreach will be free to the entire community and will be held right before hurricane season begins. It will focus on disaster awareness and preparedness with the spotlight on hurricane and coastal flooding. It is also in conjunction with National Safe Boating Week.
As you are aware that there were two hurricanes in 2016 and during Matthew, there was an extensive coastal evacuation. Many local folks said they better understood how to establish an individual and family disaster plan for communication and evacuation of loved ones in an orderly manner after attending the first Prep Rally outreach. However, some folks say they are still not sure what to do or where to go in case an evacuation is again ordered for our coastal region. This fun and unique, fair-like, tent event directly addresses those questions and the fears that everyone has, specifically focusing on our immediate coastal area in order to put minds at ease.
There will be relevant expert presentations, several demos for packing an evacuation bag and making family and even pet evacuation plans. Emergency teams//first responders will have their equipment setups for community review and demos on how to tie down your boat to weather the storm and secure other valuables, etc. are also planned.
If you remember; during the horrendous Hurricane Katrina flooding, countless teams of Coast Guard choppers and rescue swimmers worked tirelessly to rescue thousands of stranded residents. With that in mind, the “Prep Rally” highlight will be a presentation by US Coast Guard Station Brunswick, who will bring their state of the art 45’ response boat to demo water rescue in the River for the attendees in conjunction with a helicopter and rescue swimmer from US Coast Guard Air Station Savannah for the grand finale at 2PM.
