FRIENDS OF HOFWYL-BROADFIELD PLANTATION & CLASSIC COASTAL CRUISERS AUTOMOBILE CLUB PRESENT THE 7th YEAR OF OPEHLIA’S CLASSIC CAR CHALLENGE
On Saturday, October 17 from 9am to 2pm, classic cars from all over southeast Georgia will be vying for the championship of the “7th Year of Ophelia’s Classic Car Challenge, “ at Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation. Come and view the cars -- vote for your favorite! Awards will be presented to the Most Original, People’s Choice, and 1st to 5th Places. All types of vehicles are welcome.
This particular car challenge showcases the newly preserved 1970 Oldsmobile Cutlass, owned by Ophelia Dent. Upon her death in 1973, the plantation was bequeathed to the state of Georgia. Bill Hill, Freddy Merritt, and Ralph Babb, from the car club, were very instrumental in its transformation. Funds were made possible through the efforts of the FOH matching funds with contributions particularly from the Friends of Coastal Georgia History. This effort is dedicated to the memory of Bob Johnson, a site volunteer.
While visiting, tour the historic rice plantation with a 1850s style antebellum house, which gives you an authentic view of family life of the coastal rice planters. It is typical of the many plantation houses of the era. Please wear comfortable walking shoes and bring bug spray. CDC Guidelines regarding COVID-19 will be observed.
Vehicle entry fee is $20, includes park fee and a barbeque lunch with all the fixins from Mudcat Charlie’s.
Regular park access tickets: Adults, $8; Students, $5, and under 5 is free. The plantation is located at 5556 US Highway 17N, Brunswick, at the intersection of US 17 and GA 99, one mile east of I-95, exit 42.
Proceeds from this event benefit Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation, a State Historic Site.
