Saint Simons Storytelling Festival 2018
to
Epworth By the Sea 100 Arthur J. Moore Drive, Saint Simons Island, Georgia 31522
Four nationally-renowned storytellers keep us laughing all weekend at Epworth By The Sea. Come if you need a good laugh or time away to relax.
This year's featured storytellers are:
Kevin Kling: "Lightning Struck, Freight Train Hopping Hilarious Fellow"
Kevin Kling is a playwright and storyteller and has recently won a regional Emmy award. He is best known for his popular commentaries on NPR’s All Things Considered and his storytelling stage shows deliver hilarious, often tender stories. Kling ’s autobiographical tales are as enchanting as they are true to life: hopping freight trains, getting hit by lightning, performing his banned play in Czechoslovakia, growing up in Minnesota and eating things before knowing what they are. He has been awarded numerous arts grants and fellowships. The National Endowment for the Arts, The McKnight, Bush and Jerome Foundations, The Minnesota State Arts Board and others have recognized Kling’s artistry.
Donald Davis: “The Dean of Storytelling”
“I didn’t learn stories, I just absorbed them.”
Former Chairperson of the Board of Directors for the National Storytelling Association; featured teller at the Smithsonian Institution, the World’s Fair, festivals and concerts throughout the Uni ted States and the world; a prolific author and producer of books and tapes of his works; a master teacher of workshops and storytelling courses; a guest host for the NPR Program “Good Evening;" Davis is a retired United Methodist minister. He has recorded 25 storytelling albums and written several books based on his stories.
Kim Weitkamp : “The Lady of Heartfelt Wisdom”
As the redheaded child of exhausted parents, Kim grew up enjoying the role of middle child. Allowed to roam free in the heart of Amish country, her imagination was ripened by a life lived outdoors. Now she enjoys the role of being one of the most sought after storytellers in the country. In her work as a humorist, storyteller, singer and songwriter, she has taken home numerous awards and recognition including the Leadership in Communication Award from Toastmasters International and the Blue Ridge Excellence in Arts Award. Her audio A Wandering Mind is a recent Storytelling Award Winner. Her material is played regularly on NPR.
Andy Offutt Irwin: “The Man is an Outer-Kid”
Some people ha ve inner-k ids. Andy has an outer-kid. With a manic Silly Putty voice, astonishing mouth noises and hilarious stories, he is equal parts mischievous schoolboy and the Marx Brothers, peppered with a touch of the Southern balladeer. People are drawn to him like magnets to a refrigerator. And inside, it's all Mountain Dew and Jolt Cola. Andy is a storyteller, humorist, singer, songwriter, musician, whistler, walking menagerie of sound effects and dialects, and so much more; some of his talents are hard to categorize. Honors include the 2013 National Storytelling Network’s Circle of Excellence Award. Appearances include the National Storytelling Festival, International Storytelling Center and Guest Artist at the “FAME” School, Disney World, the “Southern Comedy Tour," Oxford College, and, of course, his one-man show.
