The Mint Julep became Churchill Downs’ signature cocktail in 1938, when they started serving the drink in a souvenir glass for 75 cents. Today the Kentucky Derby serves more than 80,000 juleps over the 2 day event. This Georgia twist on the classic bourbon refresher uses Southern Corn Whisky from Americus, Georgia’s 13th Colony Distillery, and is finished off with Fees Brothers Peach Bitters which add a hint of the aromatic fruit for which the state is known.
ingredients:
2 oz. 13th Colony Southern Corn Whiskey
1 Tbsp. simple syrup
2 oz. soda water
Crushed ice
6-8 fresh mint leaves
Fees Brothers Peach Bitters
Preparation:
Add whiskey, syrup, mint leaves and bitters to glass and fill 2/3 with crushed ice. Churn with bar spoon, add more ice and top with soda. Briefly stir, garnish with a mint or a peach slice & serve.
