Lose yourself in the gardens of the Tabby & Tillandsia Garden Walk and delight in the wonderful surprises you discover there. The 8th annual Cassina Garden Club event will take place at the end of the month, bringing to a close the Garden Club of Georgia’s “Garden Week in Georgia” statewide promotion April 20-26.
Once again the six private gardens on the tour have been chosen for their diversity and innovative features. Your sense will delight with the colors and scents: azaleas, camellias, jasmine, crepe myrtle, roses, citrus trees of all varieties, herbs, edibles, succulents, and lush ferns. Highlights of the gardens range from Prayer Garden to Pirate Cove. There are woodland escapes that call to mind faeries and fauna and a French formal garden that reflects the splendor of Versailles. There are water features, statues, porcelain, reclaimed brick, stone, and marble. Displays of masonry handiwork, courtyard charm, and whimsically and expertly shaped topiaries are some of the elements that imbue the gardens with the personalities of their owners. With a “how-to” table in each garden, they are sure to inspire visiting green-thumbs. Plants particularly good for use in arrangements will be featured, and there will also be a “discovery hunt” for whimsical items tucked away in each garden with prizes awarded for completed entries at the end of the day. New this year is a stop at Fort Frederica, where the Cassina Garden Club is working with the Fort staff on a joint project to grow a Colonial Herb Garden. There is also a point of interest stop at tour sponsor ACE Garden Center.
The day concludes at the Cassina Garden Club gardens at the Historic Hamilton Plantation tabby slave cabins at Gascoigne Bluff, where there will be a true celebration of spring and Southern hospitality: an afternoon garden party. The garden party will include a flower arranging demonstration, artists, and more from 2:00-5:00 p.m.
Proceeds of the tour are used for the preservation of the tabby slave cabins, a vital part of the history of St. Simons Island. This spring, a project to remove the stucco and plaster covering the exterior and interior walls and restore the old tabby underneath with an original recipe will begin. Plan to come out and take some time to smell the roses. You’ll be glad you did.
