Everyone has fun when the PGA TOUR Wives and their player husbands take to the field with local kids for a lively Wiffle ball competition as part of The McGladrey (now RSM) Classic. Smiles are contagious and there’s lots of good-natured ribbing and laughter from the mound to the dugout at this annual event.
PGA TOUR tournaments are major fundraisers for charitable causes, and the wives of the professional golfers recognized that they were in a unique position to be an effective source of funds and support for these charities and the children they benefit, so in 1988 they incorporated to create the PGA TOUR Wives Association. The Association has given back to golf communities and child related charities through volunteerism and more than $5,000,000 in monetary contributions.
McGladrey Wiffle Ball Classic 2014
During November’s McGladrey Classic, the Wiffle Ball Classic presented by Krispy Kreme featuring PGA TOUR Players and Wives plus students will be held on Tuesday, November 17th at Frederica Academy Baseball Field. Family-friendly activities will begin at 3:00 p.m. and the game will begin at 5:00 p.m. This year Elegant Island Living is proud the presenting media sponsor.
More PGA TOUR players and wives will be participating this year, and to add to the fun, there will also be carnival games, face painting, a photo booth from Studio Pixel Pop, a concessions food truck from Nacho's (And don’t forget about those Krispy Kremes!), and raffles and giveaways galore.
All proceeds will be donated to The Blessings in a Backpack program that serves Altama Elementary School, in Brunswick. Participating children (all those who are eligible for the free lunch program at school) receive a backpack every Friday, filled with non-perishable, nutritious foods like granola bars, raisins and applesauce. These healthy foods ensure that the children are nourished over the weekends, which allows them to come to school alert and ready to learn.
Kevin Kisner’s wife, Brittney, and Hudson Swafford’s wife, Katherine, are already hard at work organizing the game. “The Wiffle Ball Classic is something we look forward to all season,” says Katherine. “Blessings in a Backpack is a charity that is especially dear to our hearts at the PTWA and it’s amazing to get to spend the evening with the children that this event actually benefits. That is very rare and makes the event even more meaningful.”
Plan to take off a couple hours early that afternoon, grab the kids and head over to join the excitement. Play some games, grab a few donuts, and cheer on your favorite players. Last year the wives were triumphant, so their competitive husbands are looking to settle the score! Let’s get out there to see who wins bragging rights this year and help some local children in need at the same time.
