It’s here! Football season has arrived! The local high schools have kicked off their seasons and our beloved Georgia Bulldawgs will face off against the Clemson Tigers for their first game on Labor Day Weekend. While we are enthusiastic fans of play on the gridiron, this month’s feature is a reminder that there’s even more fall fun out there. There are outdoor adventures, indoor activities that move your body, exercises that stimulate your mind, and amusements that entertain.
Well, we certainly can’t ignore football whatsoever when we’re talking about Fun & Games in the Golden Isles, so let’s hit some highlights!
For those who may not know, our local varsity football teams are the Glynn Academy Red Terrors, Brunswick High Pirates, and Frederica Academy Knights. Their seasons are already underway, but the game to watch in September is the always exciting “City Championship” cross-town rivalry match-up between Glynn Academy and Brunswick High in Glynn County Stadium. Last year’s game was a real nail-biter, with the Terrors coming from behind to snatch a 22-15 victory over the Pirates in overtime. So plan to be at the stadium on Friday, September 27 for the 7:30 p.m. kick-off to see who will earn bragging rights this year.

When it comes to Bulldawg football, everything you need to follow UGA can be found at georgiadogs.com/sports/football. The game that most directly affects the Golden Isles doesn’t come until November 2, when the Dawgs take on the Gators and St. Simons Island becomes Athens-by-the-Sea as we welcome UGA students and others making the annual trek to Jacksonville to watch the big game. However, all eyes will be on Coach Kirby Smart and those boys in red and black on September 28 for the showdown against the Alabama Crimson Tide in Tuscaloosa. The Dawgs are going to be looking for retribution after last year’s heartbreaking 27-24 loss to Bama in the SEC Championship game! The game airs at 7:30 p.m., so plan your local tailgate/watch parties now!
