With more hours of sunshine and more time spent on and around the water comes the need to protect our eyes. We dropped into Millican Eye Care to see their spring/summer inventory and learned about choosing lenses that suit your environment from one of their top-selling brands: Costa Del Mar.
Costa offers polarized lenses in seven colors to optimize vision and eye protection in light conditions that range from low-light like dawn to extremely bright light with blinding glare. Costa’s gray and gray silver mirror lenses are the best choice for everyday activities on land and water. For offshore fishing and boating, blue mirror lenses are the best to handle glare from harsh sun and open reflective water. For freshwater and inshore treks, green mirror and copper are great options because they offer high contrast and reduce glare, with the copper also being extremely versatile and excellent for cloudy days. For performance (but not driving) at low light at dawn or dusk, the high contrast offered by Costa’s sunrise silver mirror extended wear lenses is perfect. You’ll want to make your choice based on the environment you’ll be wearing your sunglasses most. The Millican Eye Center staff is happy to help you with your selection and can discuss prescription lens needs as well.
Costa sunglasses
Something else that makes Costa stand out from other brands is the way they interact with our coastal environment. Their Untangled Collection features sunglasses with frames made from recycled fishing nets. Costa joined forces with Bureo, who works with fishermen to prevent discarded nets from polluting our oceans and harming marine life by collecting discarded nets from commercial ports in Chile and recycling them into pellets. These pellets are then molded into the Untangled Collection sunglass frames. Brilliant!
Additionally, near and dear to our hearts, Costa also offers an OCEARCH Collection with frames, colors and gear featuring designs inspired by sharks as their tribute to the creatures that help keep our ocean ecosystems balanced. Each purchase helps fund research expeditions for our friends aboard OCEARCH and their mission to protect sharks.
