John P. Shackelford, Jr. is an architect with a creative vision for classic spaces and a flair for launching and growing new businesses. A graduate of The Georgia Institute of Technology, John got his first job working for the noted architect Frank McCall, in Moultrie and then on St. Simons Island. Enriched by his experience with his mentor and worldwide travels, John went out on his own. By then he was an established name in his own right synonymous with creating the best example of a certain style of architecture in a specific period of history. He is best known in the architecture world for providing his clients with an absolute work of art. Unlike many architects today, Shackelford understands that an architect is not meant to merely place the bricks and mortar, but to know how spaces will flow and be used, as well as how they will be designed and furnished, often creating a turnkey approach to design for many of his clients.
Together with his dedicated staff, Shackelford works with his clients to think through their spaces so they not only showcase their family heirlooms but also understand how they will use and furnish their home. He delivers a product of the highest quality and has continued to do so for more than 25 years. His projects range from coast to coast, although the heart of his creation is nestled in the southeastern United States and his entrepreneurial roots run deep right here in the Golden Isles.
John’s approach to design strongly relies on his in-house designer, Nancy Stoddard. Their design projects focus on subtle use of texture, giving each home richness and depth. Nancy and John work together to ensure that each home’s color palette is designed so that the interior is visualized as a whole rather than a series of discrete rooms. Their process ensures every design is livable and even the most formal design is articulated without feeling cluttered or fussy.
The vibrancy of John’s passion for creative endeavors is made clear by stepping inside Shackelford Interiors in Redfern Village, also the home of the architectural and interior design offices. In the swirl of antiques and other home décor accessories you will find the Shoe Boutique. John recognized a niche as it opened up in the retail market on the island and set out to fill those shoes. Literally. The Shoe Boutique reflects John’s noted flair for design and has garnered loyalty from local shoe aficionados and those visiting the Golden Isles.
Shackelford’s entrepreneurial spirit ranges from the creation of classic spaces to culinary delights. He most recently launched Shackelford Fine Foods starting from scratch with his
Grandmother’s 60 year-old SugarDoodle cookie recipe. Each recipe is an old family heirloom. Each package is a manifestation of his architectural design experience. The SugarDoodle package is the proud recipient of An ADDY award for package design excellence. The ready-to-eat bite-sized cookies aptly named Granny Pearl’s Kitchen will be available in stores this spring and are debuting at the Specialty Food Show in New York this summer.
A thriving architectural design business is at the helm of John’s drive for building businesses. His commitment to tradition and integration of contemporary design has long been the cornerstone on which he built his reputation and is also an integral component of his other ventures. This, combined with a deeply rooted adoration for the Golden Isles, is his recipe for success!
