Redfern Pest Control April 2014
Termite swarmers are winged, reproductive termites that fly away from a colony to spread the colony to new places. They only swarm at certain times of year, generally the wet spring and fall months--meaning now is one of those times. These termites are only meant to mate and establish new colonies and do not cause damage; their children, however, are worker termites that will eat and destroy the wood in your home.
Termite swarmers are often confused with flying ants, but can be distinguished by their straight antennae (ants’ are bent); thicker abdomens; and 2 sectioned-bodies (ants have 3 body sections). Due to the equal length of their two pairs of wings, swarmers cannot fly terribly well, so they often use the wind to carry them long distances. That means they may get caught up in trees in your yard or on the exterior of your house, where they may return to the ground and establish residency. Sometimes, dozens of termite swarmers or their wings are found inside your home, garage, or leaving the structure of a window, door, porch columns, or other wood structures, and this is a sign of trouble. It may mean a colony has formed in or near your home. While these swarmers will not cause a termite problem, they can be a sign of an existing problem or hidden colony. If you see any signs of termite swarm activity, leave the “evidence” undisturbed and call Redfern Pest Solutions immediately for a thorough inspection. You should leave the “evidence” undisturbed and call Redfern Pest Solutions immediately for a thorough inspection.
