Cunningham Jewelers
I open the door to 1510 Newcastle Street in Historic Brunswick and a friendly voice says, "Welcome to Cunningham's.” Suddenly it strikes me that I have been hearing similar words for most of my life. My mother brought me here when I was a child and we’d look at the sparkling jewelry, shining silver and pretty plates. I watched as the ladies wrapped Mama’s purchases. Papa would say, "I see you’ve been to Cunningham’s today. I recognize the bows!" How I longed for one of those packages! When I was seven, there it was under the Christmas tree: one of my very own! Inside was a pearl on a golden chain. Every year Papa added more and more until the day I married, when it glowed as I walked down the aisle.
My dazzling solitaire diamond also came from Cunningham's. It was the first and most precious piece of jewelry from my beloved. Over the years, many more rings and earrings, pendants and bracelets were added and I cherish every one. Our daughter wore my pearls and diamond bracelet at her wedding, as did my granddaughter. We all chose our china, crystal and silver here. Over the years, important events in our lives have always been celebrated with gifts from Cunningham’s. Oh, the memories!
It's been Cunningham Jewelers for so long, not many people know that it started out as Rothschild’s in 1892. Mr. Cunningham bought it and changed its name in 1916. It still has the friendly atmosphere, the wide selection of gifts, and quality abounds on every shelf. You can find anything you need right here, from clocks, watches, men's, women’s and children's jewelry to beautifully handcrafted wooden bowls, crystal serving pieces and silver trays. If you break something, their repair department is second to none. I even have them clean my silver serving pieces. Recently my insurance needed an appraisal and, once again, Cunningham’s came through with flying colors.
Today I am purchasing a gift for my newest great granddaughter. I have chosen a silver bubble blower! It will go nicely with the Grainger McKoy sterling cup and spoon. I also couldn't resist starting her very own pearl necklace. What fun I’ll have over the years introducing her to the joys of shopping at Cunningham's.
Hmmm . . . While I’m here there's no harm in checking out those new earrings that just came in!
