The number of home accidents and thefts increase drastically throughout the holiday season; in fact, the number of homeowner’s insurance claims usually doubles during the months of November and December.

One of the main reasons for the spike in claims during the holidays is fires. Christmas trees, candles and cooking large family meals seem to be the culprits for the 15% increase in fire claims during the holidays. Fortunately, standard homeowners insurance policies cover damage due to fires. But checking on it now is a good idea. Look over your insurance policy limits. In the event that you’re forced to rebuild and replace, what does your coverage look like? Another unfortunate statistic you should be aware of is the nearly 7% increase in burglaries and theft claims during the holiday season. Make sure your gifts are out of sight, your deliveries aren’t left unattended on your doorstep, your doors are locked, and your lights are on to help deter unwanted guests. Also, since we’re in such a digital first world, resist the temptation to share too many details about your travel plans on social media. Santa isn’t the only one that’s always watching!
If the unexpected happens, make sure you are covered. Most homeowner’s insurance policies provide coverage for possessions at 50% to 70% of the dwelling’s coverage. So, if your home is insured for $500,000, you’ll have $250,000 to $350,000 worth of coverage for your belongings. There are, however, limits on luxury items so this is the time to touch base with your insurance agent.
