“There’s an elephant in the room,” says Physical Therapist, Elizabeth Daniel. “No one wants to talk about incontinence, prolapse, pelvic pain, or constipation. But these are common problems for many people and can be treated effectively with physical therapy.” Commonly known as Women’s Health Physical Therapy or Pelvic Therapy, this therapy focuses on training the pelvic floor muscles—the muscles that hold up all of your internal organs.
Elizabeth, who has 33 years of experience as a physical therapist, began researching this area of practice 2 years ago. After receiving a call from a physical therapist in Hilton Head asking if anyone locally performed this type of therapy, Elizabeth discovered the only physical therapists practicing therapy for pelvic floor dysfunction were in Hilton Head, Savannah, and at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville. As such, she began training and is now CAPP certified in Pelvic Therapy. The treatment essentially involves identifying the problem through biofeedback and then teaching the patient to focus on the muscles and strengthen them.
“It is a remarkably rewarding area of practice to be able to help so many who have been suffering with problems and pain for a very long time; unable to find medical solutions. Today they are pain-free,” says Elizabeth.
There are many causes of pelvic issues, including auto accidents, falls or problems that arose following surgery or childbirth. Treatment might include the bladder, muscles in the pelvic region or coccyx.
If you are experiencing pelvic or lower back pain that cannot be resolved or if you have problems with incontinence, prolapse or constipation that are not responding to medical treatment, talk to your doctor about a referral for Pelvic Therapy.
