About a month ago, a third-generation customer had an appointment with me to remake her grandmother's ring. I had known this young lady since she was born, so this was an honor she chose me to help her. When she arrived, her excitement was palpable. Her dream man and now her dream ring being made from a timeless family treasure.
She started explaining the fond memories of her grandmother and their time together when she was growing up. She said, “This was my grandmother’s pride and joy.” I took one look at the ring and replied, “I can see why. Can you tell me your vision of what you would like to do?” She quickly responded, “You always have the best ideas, so I would your input.” I said, “You are in for the rarest of all treats today, young lady!” One of our vendors had just released their 5” thick 2025 catalog and I was able to look up the LATEST designs in wedding bands. When I turned the book to show her a picture, her eyes filled with tears—what I had found was a ring so close to hers that it could have been made by the same factory.
She was astounded, because she was holding a treasured heirloom that she felt compelled to change just to be up with the latest trends! Our eyes locked, hers with disbelief, mine with sheer joy. “My friends said this ring was not in style,” she told me. I replied, “Not in their style maybe. Their rings are now out of style.” I explained, “When a vendor of this magnitude spends hundreds of thousands of dollars on molds, they have done their homework five years forward. It costs the factories a lot of money to make a mold, print it, publish it and to send it out. This is a science to them, since they make molds for jewelers, they have seen enough variations to let them know when they have a winning item! All we need to do is bring life back into thus ring by making it look brand new. It will take some work, but you have your dream ring and with our workmanship and quality we can make your ring as beautiful as when your grandmother walked down the aisle. Since gold is a soft metal, we will put a new back on it and retip all of the diamonds making them as secure as they once were.”
She asked whether I was surprised at the comeback of her treasure, and my simple response: “Great style never goes out of favor.” When I inquired about any vision she might have had in mind before coming in, she told me about the anxiety she’d felt, because she connected so many memories with the ring. I asked her to share some, expecting a pause, but they came rushing out with her excitement.
A beautiful heirloom is now perfect for a beautiful new beginning. Never underestimate the value of your heart’s true desire or the importance of legacy.
