Coastal Georgia Historical Society’s annual Chautauqua Lecture Series begins on Thursday, August 8. This year, an impressive group of speakers will explore the lives of four Georgia natives whose personal journeys took them beyond the South to positions of national renown and influence. Discover how an artist from Rome, Georgia became First Lady and the first Georgian in the White House. Learn about a Savannah-born choir boy who grew up to be a leading figure in the American music scene, winning an Academy Award for his hit song Moon River. Enjoy a Chautauqua-style living history presentation by Clay Jenkinson who will portray the character of Theodore Roosevelt and tell the story of his Georgia-bred mother. Jenkinson has appeared in three Ken Burns documentaries, including The Roosevelts: An Intimate History. The series will conclude with the inspiring story of a St. Simons Island native who founded The Chicago Defender, the most renowned African American newspaper in the world.
The programs will take place on Thursday evenings, August 8, 15, 22, and 29 at 6 p.m. in the A.W. Jones Heritage Center Event Hall. The cost of the series is $50 for members and $95 for non-members. Registration is required by visiting coastalgeorgiahistory.org or calling (912) 634-7090.
