Cinema Gourmet - Treasure of the Sierra Madre
The Ritz Theatre 1530 Newcastle St., Brunswick, Georgia 31520
Cinema Gourmet, Golden Isles Arts & Humanities’ popular series pairing delicious food with classic films, continues Thursday, November 13, with the classic adventure The Treasure of the Sierra Madre. The film’s screening and discussion are paired with the culinary delights of Chef Judah Lynch and Indigo Coastal Shanty. The evening’s events begin with delicious food at 6:30 p.m.
In The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, two rough-and-tumble wanderers, Dobbs (Humphrey Bogart) and Curtin (Tim Holt), meet up with a veteran prospector, Howard (Walter Huston), in Mexico and head into the Sierra Madre mountains to find gold. Although they discover treasure, they also find plenty of trouble, not only from ruthless bandits lurking in the dangerous Mexican wilderness but from their own insecurities and greed, which threaten to to boil over at any moment. The Treasure of the Sierra Madre is a powerful examination of greed and human nature, masterfully directed by John Huston with outstanding performances particularly from Walter Huston (who won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor) and Humphrey Bogart as Fred C Dobbs. It is a blend of adventure, tragedy and a riveting look at the dark path that obsession can take.
Cinema Gourmet will offer four more screenings during the season: High Noon, starring Gary Cooper and Grace Kelly on January 8, 2026; Stand By Me, Rob Reiner’s coming of age story on February 12; the hilarious British comedy starring Alec Guiness, The Ladykillers on March 12; and the film that made us all afraid to go swimming, Jaws, directed by Steven Spielberg on April 9.
