First Friday Big Read Kick-Off
to
Brunswick-Glynn County Library 208 Gloucester St., Brunswick, Georgia 31520
Golden Isles Arts and Humanities is celebrating their 10th year as a participant in NEA’s The Big Read! This year's book is A Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula K. LeGuin – the 1968 novel that is truly the predecessor of the fantasy genre for youth. Fun begins with a Parade of ‘Dragons and Other Fantastical Creatures’ from G Street south to the library and back to the Ritz Theatre. Groups and Individual prizes (created by Color Me Happy) will be awarded.
In addition, several local businesses will be a part of the "Journey through Earthsea" where participants (who are encouraged to dress as their favorite fantasy characters) will travel through the downtown area to meet a wizard and search for the true names of participating locations/items to be entered into the library's new online program Beanstack for a chance to win great prizes.
The Brunswick Library will also host a Make It and Take It Dragon Craft. Big Read exhibits at the Ritz Theatre and Brunswick Library (‘Dragons and Other Fantastical Creatures’ - an exhibit of original art by students K-12) will open, proclamations will be presented by city officials and a free screening of Dragonheart at the Ritz Theatre will take place.
The Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest and sponsored locally by: Golden Isles Arts & Humanities, The Marshes of Glynn Library System, College of Coastal Georgia, and Three Rivers Library System. Additional support is provided by helloGoodbye/St. Marks Episcopal Church, the Literary Guild of St. Simons Island, Brunswick News Publishing, and iHeartMedia.
