St. Simon’s Island, GA, July 8, 2023 -- Following the success of last year’s Common Roots: Many Branches exhibition, Glynn Visual Arts is thrilled to announce an upcoming exhibition titled Footprints in America that will be on display at 1608 Newcastle Street in Brunswick from September 14 to October 13, 2023. Over 30 pieces of art will be depicted in this distinguished collection curated by the National Alliance of Artists from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (NAAHBCU). All of the artists represented in the collection are members of NAAHBCU and are alumni and/or arts educators at HBCU institutions.
Footprints in America will showcase works of art that embody the spirit of the Negritude movement, a cultural and literary movement that originated in the 1930s among French-speaking African and Caribbean writers and intellectuals. The artworks on display will explore themes of identity, heritage, and the African diaspora within the American context. We invite you to join in celebrating the diversity, resilience, and creativity of Black artists from the southeast and their contributions to the art world. Some of the featured artists are Bryan Wilson, Dennis Winston, Dr. Lee Ransaw, Roymeico A. Carter, and Dr. Peggy Blood. “The title ‘Negritude’ empowers! NAAHBCU embraces the term and looks forward to educating the community on African American art and being a catalyst for further research on Black diaspora art,” said Dr. Peggy Blood, President of NAAHBCU. Come explore this rich and thought-provoking exhibition and gain a deeper understanding of the Black experience and culture in America. All works of art will be for sale.
Exhibition Hours: Thursday - Saturday, 12:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.
Exhibition Location: 1608 Newcastle Street, downtown Brunswick, Georgia.
The opening reception to launch the Footprints in America Exhibition will be held on Saturday, September 16th, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. It is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.
