Tennessee Williams paints this stuck-in-time tale from memories of his own life, using poetic language and a breathtakingly honest point of view to develop this memory play. The Glass Menagerie has won hearts in America since its debut in 1944, telling the story of Tom Wingfield, a young man living with his overbearing, histrionic mother, Amanda, and his cripplingly shy, fragile sister, Laura. Struggling with poverty in 1930s St. Louis, Amanda becomes fixated on finding a suitor for Laura, the family's only hope for the future. When Tom reluctantly invites a co-worker, Jim, to dinner, a long-held hope for Laura culminates into a moment of dashed hopes.
