The film stars James Cagney as George M. Cohen, the legendary playwright and writer of such iconic songs as The Yankee Doodle Boy, You’re A Grand Old Flag and Over There. Released in 1942, the film's patriotic message, celebratory musical numbers, and sentimental family saga were aimed at bolstering morale during the early months of World War II. Cagney’s depiction won him the Academy Award for best actor.
