Time to jump ahead just a little to a June event that has music as its central theme: Music and Memories. The importance of music as a memory trigger is well-known to Memory Matters Glynn, the only local non-profit dedicated to educating, supporting, and enriching the lives of individuals living with memory loss and the lives of their caregivers. The afternoon music events held by Memory Matters as one of the free programs that they offer to the community are always well attended and enjoyed. The connection between music and memories is what inspired their annual signature fundraiser.
The 50’s Sock Hop theme for this year’s event came from a recent donation. Skip Wright generously gifted an antique jukebox filled with music from the 50s. He wanted to pass the jukebox along to someone who would remember the old songs and enjoy them as much as he did. The note that came with the gift said, “Dementia may have taken my short-term memory, but never took the wonderful memories of the music I love.”
So, dust off those poodle skirts, leather jackets, and saddle shoes—it’s time to twist and shout! Come out to the beautiful A.W. Jones Heritage Center on St. Simons Island on Sunday, June 8, for a lively evening of 1950s music and nostalgia. The night will include dancing to favorite songs from the 1950s to today, live and silent auctions with some fabulous items donated by local businesses, the popular wine toss, lawn games, delicious fare from Halyard's Catering and more! This will be a night to remember as we dance through the decades and celebrate the golden age of rock ’n’ roll—all in support of Memory Matters Glynn.
For 30 years, Memory Matters Glynn has been a pillar of support in the Golden Isles community. They meet a critical and underserved need by providing education and support to help enrich the lives of those with memory loss and, equally important, the lives of their caregivers. By offering free programs that include crafts, music, and other social activities, support groups, and therapy sessions, Memory Matters strives to be a beacon of hope and comfort.
Music and Memories isn’t just a night of toe-tapping tunes and classic fun, it’s a vital fundraiser for this important non-profit organization. Every dollar raised will directly benefit the families they serve in our community, ensuring that no one has to face the challenges of memory loss alone.
