Pier Planters March2020
Beautifying our community is the goal of Live Oaks Garden Club on St. Simons Island, and they do a fantastic job at that! They recently renovated and maintain the Butterfly Garden on Demere Road. Due to the successful renovation of the Butterfly Garden, County Commissioner Peter Murphy recommended that the club also improve the appearance of the two large planters at the pier in the Village. Garden club members worked with a landscape architect to design planters that would enhance the existing palms. Now the two large planters on the right side of the pier have been planted with shrubs and perennials to withstand the strong ocean winds and the bright sun. They feature African iris, conversation azaleas that have three color blooms, variegated liriope and small lantanas. The garden club will change the annual focal plants seasonally.

Live Oaks Garden Club also maintains the Rose Garden adjacent to the Butterfly Garden at Demere Park. They were responsible for planting the live oak trees near the airport on Demere Road and landscaped the grounds at Glynn Visual Arts and a square in Brunswick. They also provide funds for irrigation at Mary Ross Park. All of this is possible due to the club's successful annual Poinsettia Sale. Dave Austin and his staff with Glynn County Public Works provide continued support to the garden club and are much appreciated by its members.
