The Space Between, an exhibit of works by Betty Oliver and Susan Ryles will be on display in at he Portman Gallery at GVA February 22 - April 1. Join them for an Exhibition Reception Thursday, March 10 From. 5:30 - 7:30 p.m.
This exhibition grew out of an artistic friendship and discussions about the pandemic and the “spaces” it has put “between” us as human beings. A broader discussion of the idea evolved into how we as human beings tend to live our lives in the between space. These “between spaces” can literally be physical space like distance or place, or it can be metaphorical or ideological space, like a state of being such as change or stasis, persona or who we were and who we are now. These spaces between are often painful or at the least mundane and uncomfortable, but can be periods of gestation, ripening, learning and growth. Betty Oliver and Susan Ryles explore this idea from very different directions and art mediums. There is space between even the mediums used and the interpretations of this idea.
Betty Oliver works two and three dimensionally, through watercolor, gouache, paper sculpture and ink prints of her beloved and omnipresent coastal home and landscape. Susan works three-dimensionally, through ceramics and mixed media focusing on the “boxes” we separate ourselves into and personal sacred spaces, as well as the spaces between the feminine and feminist.
