Because our website calendar doesn't like events that last more than a day and often fails to display them properly, we're going to keep a running list of ART EXHIBITIONS & EVENTS right here with "Artie," the paint-splattered pooch as our mascot. Scroll through to see ongoing displays at our local galleries, followed by special art events we have listed by date.

MAY EXHIBIT:
Golden Isles Arts & Humanities is pleased to share About Face, The Faces of Catherine Durrett in the Millie Wilcox Gallery opening with a community reception during the First Friday festivities on May 3 from 5-8 p.m. at the Ritz Theatre in Downtown Brunswick.
About Face features faces. “Just face it. We ‘read’ each other by our faces,” says Catherine. “Our expressions give us away…even our pets will pull a face.” Catherine Durret’s whimsical style draws the eye to the faces of her subjects. The expression seen gives way to an empathetic reaction. Whether human or animal, her faces translate the emotions within.
Ms. Durrett honed her artistic skills at Portland Art Museum School, Atlanta College of Art, Art Institute of Atlanta, NYC School of Visual Arts, NYC Pratt Phoenix and private tutoring. She has worked in various fields including model making for television and print ads; 2-D animation for an interactive educational CD; architectural photography; and commercial illustration. Her own business, *Pena Haku, includes murals, faux treatments, trompe l’oeil and paintings. Catherine has enjoyed group and solo shows in New York City; published art in Jezebel magazine in Atlanta, Georgia; and painted four panels for the original AIDS Quilt hanging in the White House. Back in the Golden Isles, Catherine continues art locally. She has contributed to The Mural Project in downtown Brunswick, has designed and painted sets at The Ritz Theatre, and does business and residential specialty painting in the area. For more information and art go to: CathyDurrett.com or Penahaku.wordpress.com.

MAY 7 - JUNE 14: "Transformation" by Michael Jinkins and Jeff Mead. Opening Reception, Tuesday May 14, 5:30-7pm
Michael Jinkins and Jeff Mead, two acclaimed artists with distinct styles and inspirations, are set to showcase their latest works, offering a glimpse into the diverse influences shaping their artistic journeys.
Michael Jinkins, drawing from a rich tapestry of artistic traditions, finds his principal inspiration in the American abstract expressionist movement, notably the works of luminaries such as Mark Rothko and Jackson Pollock. However, his oeuvre transcends conventional boundaries, incorporating elements of post-Impressionism and evoking echoes of J. M. W. Turner's majestic landscapes. Moreover, he draws inspiration from a diverse array of artistic mediums, including illustrations, cartoons, and traditional Chinese and Japanese painting. For Jinkins, painting is more than a creative pursuit; it is a spiritual practice, inviting viewers to engage in contemplation and immerse themselves in the profound mysteries of existence. Reflecting on his artistic philosophy, Jinkins remarked, "The more deeply I have inquired into the nature of ultimate reality, the more I have sought to create works of beauty upon which our eyes and our minds can rest."
Jeff Mead's artistic vision is equally distinctive, characterized by a profound reverence for nature and a commitment to sustainability. Mead specializes in crafting sculptural vessels from locally salvaged wood, with all materials sourced from trees felled by storms or requiring emergency removal. Embracing the imperfections and unique characteristics of each piece of wood, Mead allows the material itself to guide his creative process. The freshness and vitality of the green wood lend a dynamic quality to his creations, as the natural drying process imbues each piece with an organic elegance impossible to replicate through conventional methods. Mead's artistry celebrates the resilience and beauty of nature, transforming what some might perceive as flaws - such as knots, rot, and cracks - into the defining features of his work. Reflecting on his approach, Mead commented, "The wood must guide me; it cannot be forced. Thus, the 'defects' of these areas usually become the highlights of my work."

Hotel Simone - 1200 Ocean Boulevard
Trish Rugaber is the current Artist in Residency at Hotel Simone in partnership with Glynn Visual Arts (GVA). Rugaber is the sixth artist to be featured in this series since its launch in January of 2023. GVA is the oldest arts organization in the area with a mission to enrich the community by stimulating interest and participation in the visual arts while providing St. Simons Island and the broader Golden Isles community with a center for creative expression, a source of art education, and a showcase for art and artists both locally and nationally celebrated.
Rugaber has enjoyed drawing and painting since childhood. She studied art in Connecticut before attending graduate school at the University of Florida, where she had the opportunity to study with internationally-acclaimed botanical artist Marion Ruff Sheehan. In the 1990s she embarked on a twelve-year journey of classical studies in oils with Jeanne Nelson Szabo. During those years, she was a biology and botany professor at the College of Coastal Georgia, and combined her love of the natural world with her art as a way of life. Over the past 25 years, Rugaber has exhibited widely throughout the Southeast, and her work is represented in many private collections. She is a member of the American Impressionist Society, the American Society of Botanical Artists, Glynn Visual Arts (St. Simons Island, GA), the Jekyll Island Art Association (Jekyll Island, GA), the Arts Council of Henderson County, the Art League of Henderson County, and the Arts Council of Transylvania County (NC). Rugaber co-founded ArtTrends Gallery on St. Simons Island in 2015, and her work has been an ongoing part of the gallery ever since.
Of this exhibition, Rugaber says, “I am honored for this wonderful opportunity. In my 2023-24 series of oil paintings entitled ‘Impressions of Driftwood Beach’, I wanted to capture the awe and inspiration that I feel of this special place in the Golden Isles. I hope that viewers will catch that spark as well.”
Rugaber’s work will be on display through June 30 and can be viewed daily during normal business hours in the lobby of Hotel Simone. See more about Trish and her art at trishrugaber.com
