On Saturday, March 22, the Wings, Wheels and Run event welcomes the community to the airport and will feature a 1 Mile Fun Run/Walk, a 5K Run/Walk, a fly-in of general aviation and commercial aircraft plus a classic car show, as well as other special offerings. All proceeds will benefit the Glynn County Schools Athletic Department.
“We have a long history of commitment to aviation in the Golden Isles, noted Rob Burr, Executive Director of the Glynn County Airport Commission. “Wings, Wheels and Run allow us to show our appreciation to the community and to help local schools at the same time.”
The day begins as runners take their places for two race events sponsored by Stambaugh Aviation. The 1-Mile Fun Run/Walk for all ages begins at 9:00 a.m., followed by the 5K Run/ Walk at 9:30 a.m. The unique racecourse sends runners between massive commercial planes and tankers on the ramp area at Stambaugh Aviation. On the other side of the runway, there will be a dynamic slate of activities from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Spirit of Freedom, an original C-54E aircraft from the Berlin Airlift, will make a special visit co-sponsored by Manning Aviation and Stambaugh Aviation. The airlift, the largest aviation humanitarian event in history, saved 2.5 million citizens of Berlin from starvation during a Soviet blockade in 1948-49. Spirit of Freedom will repeat the famed Berlin Candy Drop by dropping miniature parachutes with sweets over the crowd.
Admission prices for the museum and memorial inside the fully restored plane are $3 per adult, $2 per child or $5 per family. Anyone in a uniform (military, law enforcement, first responders, ROTC, Boy and Girl Scouts) is admitted free of charge.
The “Wings” part of the day co-sponsored by the Glynn County Airport Commission and the Glynn County Airport Tenants Association, will feature a fly-in of both private and commercial aircraft. The planes on display will range from vintage models to modern commercial jets representing over seven decades of flight. A full-size cabin mock-up of Gulfstream’s new G280 gives visitors the chance to experience the interior of the luxurious super midsize business jet.
The “Wheels” classic car show, as well as special aviation exhibits, demonstrations by the Glynn County Police and Fire Department and displays will round out the event. Inside the passenger terminal at Brunswick Golden Isles Airport, guests can register for Delta Airlines ticket giveaways and other prizes. Tasteful Temptations Catering will offer classic American fare. Free parking will be available at the Brunswick Golden Isles Airport passenger terminal, as well as Manning Aviation, adjacent to Gulfstream Aerospace.
