BLOOM by Jeff Homans
Planting a tree or a garden is a nice way to commemorate a resolution to grow and bloom. Cultivation and care in gardening endeavors are rewarded with accomplishment, beauty, and the freshest food you can find.
A garden's success, as with any resolution, is directly proportional to the planning and priority you place on it. Give it some careful thought, do your homework on what plants are most likely to thrive in the environment you have available, and begin with your ideal end result in mind.
Citrus is my favorite tree species to incorporate into the landscape because it offers fruit, flowers, and fragrance. Meyers lemon and Satsuma orange are excellent choices that are hardy to our climate. Plant citrus in the early spring after the last chance of frost and water well through the first summer growing season.
A small garden of leafy greens is ideal for the cooler months of the year between October and February. Our fall and winter climate is favorable to growing cabbages, greens, swiss chard, kale, and lettuce. Raised beds work best, but you can also utilize empty pots and empty annual beds in the off-season. Invest in a rich organic potting soil and automatic irrigation for maximum results.
