REFLECT by Dee Simmons
Mirrors have been objects of fascination since the 13th century. They represent truth and illusion at the same time. Once only affordable to the rich, mirrors have become an easy and inexpensive way to add light and depth to any room. One just needs to be aware of what the mirror will reflect. Ideally you want it to reflect something wonderful such as a piece of art or a great view to the outside. When considering placement, beware of it reflecting a stash of clutter or a dreary corner.
Mirroring an entire wall is a great way to brighten a room or hallway. It suggests there is more space than meets the eye. Placing a chest and lamp in front of the mirrored wall provides a very glamorous yet subtle effect.

A trend of note to look for in the coming months would be mirrored backsplashes. In the past, it has been popular to add these in a bar or butler’s pantry; however, it is becoming increasingly more common to use them in the kitchen. This creates great light for cooking and opens up the space. *Designer’s tip: an antique mirrored tile will show much less splatter than the clear version.
There is no reason to limit mirrors to the wall anymore. Popular during the Hollywood age (1920's-1940's) there are all sorts of furniture pieces that are available in mirrored versions today. These pieces lend themselves to most styles of décor and are a great way to accentuate colors and patterns.
