Coastal Symphony of Georgia
The Coastal Symphony of Georgia (CSG) is privileged to offer an evening of triumphant music in tribute to our local wounded warriors. For Luis Haza, whose father gave his life for the cause of liberty in Cuba, this is "an artistic expression of gratitude" to those who fight to preserve our freedoms. "I wanted to find a way to say thank you and contribute to the support of our magnificent military men and women," says Haza, CSG Music Director and Conductor. Haza left Cuba with his mother when he was a young child following his father's assassination. "There is not a day goes by that I don't think how fortunate I am to live in America."
The May concert will include triumphant music from around the world and will feature members of the CSG Chorus and the Glynn Academy Concert Choir in selections from Aida, The 1812 Overture and The Battle Hymn of the Republic. "Music knows no boundaries, no language barriers," says Nathaniel Roper, Director of Choral and Orchestral Activities at Glynn Academy. "Anytime I have an opportunity for my young singers to sing with professional musicians, I accept," says Roper, "especially when combined with a chance to remind them of the great history of our country and the freedoms that we so often take for granted."
In addition to enjoying the stirring music, concertgoers will be able to make donations to the work being done by Lt. Col. Buck Bennett, Georgia Army National Guard, his wife Joni and about two dozen volunteers. Their team responds primarily to needs of soldiers and their families served by the Warriors Transition Battalions at Ft. Stewart in Savannah and Ft. Gordon in Augusta including one-on-one support, family events, hospice care, and a myriad of other needs. For Col. Bennett, who fought with the 48th Brigade in Iraq in 2005 and 2006, the evening will carry special significance. "One percent of our population is defending the other 99%," he notes. "People need to remember there is a war going on, and that results in an enormous need of support for our wounded warriors and their families."
Tickets: $35 Adults, $5 Children Available at Hattie's Book, Brunswick; St. Simons Drug, St. Simons Island, online at www.coastalsymphonyofgeorgia.org or at the door.
