The St. Simons Lighthouse Keeper’s Dwelling received an award for Excellence in Restoration from the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation at its 38th annual Preservation Awards ceremony. In 2010, a report confirming the need for interior and exterior repairs of the dwelling prompted the decision to restore the entire building to its 1872 appearance. Through architectural accuracy, new exhibits, and period room settings, the restored Lighthouse Keeper’s Dwelling now brings to life the story of its inhabitants and the area, fulfilling the Coastal Georgia Historical Society’s mission to serve as a center of educational excellence. “Glynn County is proud of our successful partnership with the Historical Society on the Keeper’s Dwelling restoration project,” said Dale Provenzano, Chairman of the Glynn County Commissioners. “Stewardship of our community’s historic structures is important to local residents and integral to our tourism economy. We are grateful to the Georgia Trust for this prestigious award.” To learn more about The Georgia Trust and the Preservation Awards, visit georgiatrust.org.
