SSLT Oyster Roast
The St. Simons Land Trust Oyster Roast
Twenty-five fat sacks of oysters are the main attraction of one of the most highly anticipated fall events on St. Simons Island. The annual signature fundraiser for the St. Simons Land Trust is an oyster roast of epic proportions with a volunteer crew more than 100 members strong and is now in its 15th year. This community event celebrates the Land Trust and its preservation work, and highlights local chefs, restaurants, and volunteers who work together to make the occasion one of the best nights on the island.
“Each year, the event gets better and better,” said Executive Director, Ben Slade. “This year, I expect no different.”
Bushels and bushels of roasted oysters provided by Denise Gentile of Bennie’s Red Barn and Charlie Williams of Crabdaddy’s and procured by City Market will be shucked, and guests will also enjoy Southern fare like Low Country Boil and barbeque, as well as free-flowing libations. Oyster knives are provided and volunteers are more than willing to offer pointers on technique. Even the shells will be put to good use, as they will be recycled in reefs as part of the living shoreline project at Cannon’s Point Preserve.
Plan to join the fun on Saturday, November 22 from 5-8:00 p.m. at Gascoigne Park. The evening will feature music by Nashville band Bucktown Kickback. Noted for an eclectic but focused style, and honest, hard driving, acoustic sets, “Bucktown Kickback slides easily from Bluegrass to Country to a rootsy Americana at the drop of a wide-brimmed hat,” says one reviewer. This year each attendee of the oyster roast will also receive a special commemorative t-shirt printed with a contest-winning design. Tickets are available to SSLT members at a discounted rate of $50 before November 8. After that date, tickets are $75. For advance tickets or to become a member, call 912.639.9109 or visit sslt.org.
