Lisa Kerns with son, Max
Gemstones, obsidian glass, shark teeth and arrowheads are the kinds of things SSI native and UGA grad, Lisa Kerns, has been collecting since the age of seven. She began creating jewelry out of her treasures using her own made-up techniques by age thirteen. Now her dramatic statement necklaces and spectacular signature pieces adorn runways and can be found in high-end boutiques throughout the US.
During college, Lisa honed her skills by managing a bead and jewelry store where she taught classes, ordered product, created custom pieces, and gained a basic understanding of introductory gemology and the jewelry industry. After graduating with a degree in Advertising and a minor in Anthropology, Lisa moved to Atlanta. There she worked a variety of jobs including design and production for another jewelry designer, managing an upscale bead store and e-commerce website, and worked in customer service and graphic design for a boutique candle company. Lisa also began selling her jewelry to various boutiques throughout the South, participated in art and fashion events, and started creating custom bridal packages for customers and friends.
Armed with an extensive knowledge of the industry as well as her background in advertising and design, Lisa returned home to St. Simons Island and decided to take her hobby to the next level using her social media expertise. After spending a year working as the creative director for Bourbon and Boweties, creating new collections and pieces, participating in large trade shows, and helping generate more than 500 new retailers for the brand, Lisa has now turned her attention to the expansion of her own jewelry line.
Lisa’s one of a kind and limited edition pieces are inspired by the coastal lifestyle, the cosmos, zodiac and astrology, tribal culture and ancient civilizations, classic rock musicians and albums, and materials provided by nature itself. To date Lisa has participated in large fashion events like Charleston Fashion Week and African Fashion Week in NYC. She also provided jewelry for the ladies of the band “Of Monsters and Men” on a 2013 episode of Saturday Night Live. Lisa admits she’s a total control freak, creating and designing all of her jewelry, as well as photographing each piece, and doing all of her own graphic design, web design, advertising and social media marketing. She credits her son Max for giving her the courage to take the leap into self-employment and inspiring her daily drive to succeed.
Lisa Kerns Jewelry can be found locally at Viola’s Market and Cloister Collection and Lisa is steadily building a variety of new retailers and websites worldwide.
