Joseph Plata Collection
What woman hasn’t wished to have clothing that fits her perfectly, making her feel that it was made especially for her? That desire keeps skilled seamstresses and tailors busy pinning, tucking, and altering clothing after purchase to fit the owner’s measurements. Joseph Plata, the owner and designer of Joseph Plata Collection, understands perfectly how frustrating it can be for fashionable women who demand perfect fit, quality and detail in their clothing purchases. To bring that level of satisfaction to his clients, the price of each piece of clothing purchased from his collection includes fittings and alterations before the item is considered completely finished and sent to the buyer.
The Colombia, South America-born designer began his training early by apprenticing with a furrier right after graduation from high school. He learned coat construction, which spurred his interest in design and led him to Lakewood, Ohio, where he graduated from the Art and Design School at Virginia Marti College. He’s been designing since the early 1990s, creating a collection of fine apparel that includes special occasion, cocktail, mother of the bride, separates and executive suiting.
Joseph uses the same fine Italian and French fabric and exquisite French lace artisans used by Valentino, Oscar de la Renta and Vera Wang. He searches for the best English tweeds and wools, Italian silk wools, French and Italian brocades and damasks, and the best and most luxurious Asian silks. His eye for detailing and flourishes extends to creating his own fabric-covered buttons and stitched with Swarovski crystals.
Plata gets his design ideas from multiple sources – the fabrics he uses, upcoming fashion trends, and often from the women who purchase his clothing. He enjoys collaborating with his clients, making their design ideas into clothing they’ll treasure forever. For his spring collection, he’s using lots of color, especially coral and turquoise, grounded by light touches of neutrals. He was inspired by the richness of the silks, silk and cotton blend and quality cottons he found, and is also using chiffons and silk georgettes in his designs. He’s especially fond of the intricate texture in a matelassé fabric, which he bought in several colors. And this season, he’s expanded his collection to include his new love, a line of dresses which can be dressed up or down.
The Joseph Plata Collection is shown in private homes, and he and his team plan four trunk shows on St. Simons Island in 2014: early spring will be in late January; late spring/early summer in mid-April; fall in early September, and holiday/resort in early November. His orders are fulfilled in his Atlanta showroom/warehouse and usually ship within two weeks from order. Classic, fashion-inspired silhouettes, cut from the finest European fabrics with couture details AND perfect fit are now available without leaving the island!
